Hi Lovelies! I decided to take a break from researching and planning looks for my upcoming Asian/Arabesque inspired shoot to share a few behind the scenes snaps of me working… I am always being asked to talk about my work so I thought I’d show you exactly what I get up to!
So I start my day off with a hot drink just to wake me up, especially since I usually start my day at 5 am after having a night working, blogging, checking emails or cleaning the kit.
I always wash up as soon as I reach the shooting location, since I use a lot of public transport, I feel icky touching all the poles/ stairways along the way; and I don’t want to work on someone's face with god knows what kind on my hands!
I then talk ideas, mood boards & lighting with whoever is in charge and the photographer before I go ahead and set up my kit. It’s easier for me to have all the products ready and laid out in front of me and on hand. It saves so much time and really helps me visualise the look/s we are going for.
I prefer to start with the hair, ( if I’ve been asked to do hair...) especially if I’m curling it or doing an up do as not only do I get the hair out of the model’s face but I feel like the hair sits better later on. It also helps with deciding how strong to go on the makeup look.
I love looking at BTS snaps especially on shoots I am a part of, as I’m usually focusing on the model and looks that I am creating, so it’s really nice to be given these pictures so that I can reflect back on each shoot and see what I’ve created, what I can improve and just to see all the exciting things that I may have missed.
"I actually remember this one time whilst doing a model's makeup, one of the photographer was walking backwards whilst taking a picture of the model.
Shoots typically last anywhere between 4 - 12 hours, although I have worked on a 16 hour shoot one time with multiple models and no assistants; My feet and back were not happy! But when you do look back at final images and see everything tie up together, all the time, pressure & exhaustion are worth it every time.
After the shoot, I pack up everything quite quickly and Tetris all my bags into the Zuca as I am usually too preoccupied with discussing final images and edits with the photographer to properly organise everything.
At this point, I am also cleaning up any spilled make up, or any disposable rubbish that's been made and wiping the make up off of most models faces, since they don’t like leaving with make up on their face.
As soon a I get home though, I take my kit apart to organise it as things tend to get mixed around whilst I'm working especially if I only have 15 minutes to do a full face, which happens often believe it or not! I also restock and refill anything that has finished or is running low such a disposables (cotton buds, mascara wands & lip gloss wands) or depotted creams, gels or foundations. I make sure to sanitise all my powder palettes & wipe everything down so there are not dirty finger prints or smeared make up on any packaging, (Dirty kits are a big no-no for me!)
Lastly all makeup brushes & tools are deep cleaned and laid out to dry ready for me to pack up the next morning into my shoulder bag.
I hope you liked reading about my job!
And as always…
