I got a little review here on the Beauty Blender sponge that I get asked about so often. I actually picked these up 3 years ago to add to my professional kit but in the process of trying them out, I decided to keep these for myself & ended up purchasing some special edition Black Beauty Blenders for my Pro kit instead! Don’t judge me!
Here’s what the packaging and website say:
“Introducing Beautyblender, the ultimate make up sponge applicator. Beautyblender has been created to leave you with a professional finish and a flawless complexion. Forget your fingers or sharp-edged triangular sponges, these application methods waste make up and can leave visible streaks.
Beauty Blender’s patent-pending elliptical shape makes application foolproof by allowing you to access hard-to-reach areas with stunning ease. Beautyblender is latex free, non-allergenic and odour free.”
So after reading this on the website, watching the MakeupGeek tutorial on it, and seeing Mario use it on Kim Kardashian, I was intrigued. However for some reason I never ran out and brought it because I did have great brushes for foundation already.
I brought the beauty blender duo and cleanser for around £26 from Fulham, London when I was down there on a makeup gig. I was working near this amazing pro makeup artist shop there called Guru Makeup Emporium which is every pro artist’s dream! It is a wonderland & amongst the luscious lipsticks, eyeshadows and palettes, I spied some bright fushia almost neon sponges that called out my name…
Now first off I will say the price is a hell of a lot considering its just a pink round sponge… but hear me out please ladies! This egg-shaped sponge is just fabulous and loathe am I to admit it, I will say that it is amazingly good at its job. It blends out the foundation and gives you that flawless look without any streaks or cakeyness whatsoever.
So what I do is run the beauty blender under cold water very quickly & squeezing it out or I will spray the beauty blender with MAC Fix+ so that it’s damp. I then squirt foundation onto my hand and dab the foundation onto the sponge and onto the face, using stippling, rolling & bouncing motions to apply an even layer blending it outwards.
The sponge feels so light and soft, it really feels nice bouncing it all over the face… (That what she said!!) Once I’ve applied a nice thin layer to my face, I go back and either apply my concealor by hand and blend out with the pointy end of the sponge or I just use the sponge to apply concealor straight on my face. By doing the above steps I really get that airbrushed, seamless look, and I don’t feel like I have foundation on!
The great thing is that by using the sponge damp, not only does it expand to twice its size and get soo soft, but it also absorbs less product as well. Also if you do apply too much blush than by going back over it with the beauty blender, the blush can be muted down.
- Easy to use.
- Softer on the skin than brushes.
- Blends Foundation beautifully (especially when contouring with cream products) with a seamless finish.
- No more cakeyness.
- Rewashable and Reuseable.
- Great for all over the face including under the eyes & around the nose.
- Expensive for a sponge… Even if it’s pink and egg shaped!
- You have to wash after every single use or every other use.
- The Beauty blender does get stained with foundation, no matter how much you wash it, even using the special beauty blender cleanser.
Now I’m not saying this has replaced my brushes however it gives a nice alternative to my buffing brush and the traditional flat, foundation brush. Having options is good and I like having the option of using this.
